It all started with first-hand experience

After being involved in a mountaineering incident, WFAC founder, Neil Ritchie, realized how critical it is for outdoor enthusiasts to have wilderness-specific first response training

Neil has been working in the industry since the early 2000s, initially for the world’s largest provider of wilderness medicine, the Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI) of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in the USA. He soon seen need for a program that meets the specific needs of the Australian environment. Drawing on his extensive field experience, he founded Wilderness First Aid Australia. Neil continued to use WMI's evidence-based curriculum to assist in developing the Australian courses. WFAA has grown to be the largest provider of remote area first aid training in Australia.

In 2013 WFAA purchased Wild Aid training. Founded in Sydney, Wild Aid was renowned for providing excellent remote area first aid courses throughout Australia. We have been able to combine the exemplary service and geographical outreach of both companies to provide quality WFA training Australia-wide.

In 2018 WFAA entered a partnership with the Australian Institute of Leadership and Safety (AILS), a leading Australian registered training organisation (RTO), to assist with compliance and qualification delivery.

In 2019 Wilderness First Aid Consultants joined the family of companies. WFAC has seen many changes over the years and its future lies in filling a gap in availability of more flexible training delivery. WFAC now offers a fully online first aid training program for those needing wilderness specific competencies.

Our instructors range from professional outdoor educators, urban EMT’s, advanced and intensive care paramedics, nurses, ski patrollers and guides. Their breadth of knowledge and experience covers an array of patient management contexts and outdoor environments.

Instructors are skilled at not only performing clinical skills, but teaching them. They are passionate about imparting their knowledge and will do their best to see their students succeed - not just to pass the course but to be confident in a real-life emergency. Our instructors, while each having their own teaching style, are all dedicated to teaching in a way that helps understanding and information retention.
